Surdu berichtet über die Entwicklungen in der Erwachsenenbildung in Rumänien, die einen hohen politischen Stellenwert für Demokratisierung und Beschäftigungsfähigkeit hat. Er berichtet von der besonderen Problemlage in Rumänien im Übergang vom Kommunismus zum Kapitalismus und beschreibt, welche besonderen Lösungen eben deshalb hier gefunden werden.
Ubuntu ist ein Konzept des gemeinwesenorientiertem kultursensiblem Lernens. Es nimmt die afrikanischen Traditionen des Lernens auf und ist auf die Errichtung prosozialer Gemeinschaften fokussiert. Genutzt werden sollen dabei die Ressourcen, die jeweils lokal zur Verfügung stehen und ein nützliches Lernen ermöglichen. Das Konzept wird von antikolonialen Intellektuellen seit Anfang der 1980er Jahre vertreten.
