In multiethnic and multicultural societies, segregation between subgroups is a common phenomenon. Each group tends to define itself via characteristic features perceived to distinguish it from and contrast favourably to neighbouring groups. The author describes changing ways of looking at ethnos as a concept and analyses sociological, economic, judicial and psychological determinants. She goes on to discuss paedagogical measures to mitigate potential sources of conflict.
The essay looks at the classical ideas of the relationship between „host“ and „guest”, between the „I“ and the „Other“ from a new angle. To that end , two of the most important protagonists of contemporary French philosophy of Jewish origin are consulted. Emmanuel Levinas and his interpreter Jacques Derrida present a philosophy of hospitality which makes us think – and demands that we think, and that we act responsibly even into the far thest political consequences. Since their philosophy is fu…
Is there anything to the cliché of the xenophobic and violence-prone East German? More than many will like: Three modernization and informalisation defects more common to the society of the former GDR than to the Czech Republic or Poland make these defense mechanisms against foreigners more understandable: • a certain „intergenerational resistance to modernisation”, • a GDR-specific „egalitarian outlook“ and • a continuation of subtly racist attitudes within families. The addressing of construc…
The Grundtvig project European Intercultural Competence Programmes (EICP) conducted at the DIE tests further education measures for administrative bodies that involve intercultural competence, not just as far as staff development is concerned, but also in terms of organisation development. The concept is based on the idea of civilian dialogue and addresses heads of administration as well as representatives of migrants’ organisations.
